Low-energy photon irradiation by light in the far-red to near-IR spectral range with low-energy lasers or LED- light emitting diode has been found to modulate various biological processes in cell culture and animal models. The wavelengths of light effects cell membrane permeability and production of ATP. The near-infrared wavelengths of light are able to penetrate up to a few centimeters into (biological tissues). The bodies own muscular tissue, it is often recommended for the treatment of deep soft-tissue injuries, joint conditions, neurogenic pain and musculoskeletal disorders. These effects depend on a suitable intensity and wavelength of light delivered for an appropriate amount of time.
A certified laser technician will use what is called a cluster probe that passes low level laser light or LED light through specific myo-fascial trigger points. These trigger points absorb the photons of the laser light. The presence of the photons causes a release of the bodies natural chemicals, they will go to work to relieve the withdrawal symptoms and the pain associated with them. These sessions vary from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the probe power, wavelength and depth of target tissue.
